#ygkChallenge: Take Climate Action

Climate Action, Kingston, OntarioThe #ygkChallenge is an ongoing series where we dare you to be different, resolve to be better, and or do something awesome in support of our beloved community. Each week, Kingstonist establishes a new, ambitious or quirky goal, encouraging you to step out of your comfort zone and do something great, and hopefully a little out of the ordinary. By taking part in this community-wide initiative, we hope to make Kingston (and the world) a slightly better place to live, work and play.

This week’s #ygkChallenge encourages you to:

Take a climate action.  Did you know the community-built Kingston Climate Action Plan has a goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 352,500 tonnes by 2020 (based on 2011 projections)?

This week’s #ygkchallenge is to take action to reduce your carbon footprint and Tweet your action to us – and to #ygkClimateAction. The City of Kingston is offering a chance to win a programmable thermostat or Kingston Transit multi-ride pass to anyone using the #ygkClimateAction hashtag until May 27.
What’s a climate action? Cycling instead of driving, drying clothes on the line, reducing your use of energy any way you can – or planting a tree!

To promote the need to take action on climate change, the City is also giving away white pine seedlings:

  • during free tours of the Kingston Area Recycling Centre at 196 Lappan’s Lane from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 7 and
  • during the Public Works Open House at the Public Works Yard off Railway Street near Division Street from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 14

For more climate action ideas, check out the city’s website.

Join us in completing this week’s #ygkchallenge by liking it on Facebook and/or re-Tweeting it on Twitter. By liking and sharing, you’re not only committing to doing something great, but you’re also helping us spread the word and hopefully encouraging others to participate.
