Spring snowfall warning in effect for Kingston area

Despite the fact the first day of spring has passed, Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for Kingston and the surrounding area.

The warning was issued on the morning of Friday, Mar. 22, 2024, and advises of possible accumulation of up to 15 cm.

“Light snow is expected to begin this morning, but should intensify late in the afternoon or evening. The snow will taper off from west to east late tonight,” the national weather agency said in the warning, noting that it may have an impact on the evening commute in urban areas.

Peak snowfall rates of 2 cm per hour are possible, and Environment Canada warned that reduced visibility is likely during periods of heavy snow.

“Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways, and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions. If visibility is reduced while driving, turn on your lights and maintain a safe following distance,” Environment Canada stated.

The snowfall warning is in effect for Gananoque, Kingston, Odessa, Frontenac Islands, Napanee, Consecon, Sandbanks Park, Picton, Belleville, Quinte West, and Eastern Northumberland County, and along Lake Ontario to the Hamilton area. Visit the Environment Canada website for updated details.
