Kingston Police have made an arrest after an individual barged into a not-yet-open establishment, assaulted an employee, and stole merchandise.

According to a release from Kingston Police, the incident took place at approximately 9:15 a.m. on Monday, Jun. 10, 2024, when police responded to a call regarding a robbery which had just taken place in the 700 block of Montreal Street.

“Further investigation revealed that the accused had attended this location, prior to the establishment opening for the day, and while trying to access the front door, which was locked, had been met by one of the employees, who had indicated to them that the business was closed,” police detailed.

“Once the door had been unlocked, the accused proceeded to push their way past the employee and entered the establishment. The employee directed the accused to leave the premises at which time the accused grabbed them and threw them against a wall. The accused then removed merchandise from behind a counter. After trying unsuccessfully to access other merchandise, which was locked behind the counter, the accused then left the premises.”

Police reportedly located the accused outside of the establishment on the sidewalk. According to the release, the accused yelled at the arriving officer and was acting highly agitated, walking towards police with fists clenched in an aggressive manner.

“Police advised the accused that they were under arrest for the robbery, and they immediately became actively resistant while pulling away from the officer. The accused aggressively flailed their arms at the officer, attempting to strike them,” Kingston Police stated.

The accused continued to resist officers throughout the arrest, however, they were ultimately taken into custody and subsequently transported to police headquarters where they were held to attend a bail hearing the following day, according to the release.

Jonathon Gordon, a 39-year-old local individual, was charged with:

  • robbery with violence
  • break and enter a place other than a dwelling with intent
  • resisting arrest
