Starting tomorrow, Thursday, Feb. 1, 2024, an outdoor art installation will be open to the public in Springer Market Square. The experience, called Horizon, is a serene light and sound exhibit that is free for everyone to enjoy.

According to a release from the Downtown Kingston Business Improvement Area (BIA), Horizon is a collection of interactive cocoon-like structures and will be located on the south side of City Hall.

“Public art installations have the power to build community,” said Sandi Griffiths, Events Coordinator with the BIA. “The winter months can be isolating, so we’re always looking for activities that bring people together in interesting and meaningful ways.”

Horizon offers a unique opportunity to escape the ordinary and connect with nature, the BIA stated. According to the release, each cocoon features a beautiful ash wood bench that, when rocked, triggers a synchronized light and sound display on the dome above. The immersive experience includes three distinct themes—starry vault, flock of birds, and calming canopy—each transporting visitors to a “realm beyond the everyday”.

“By offering memorable experiences we’re encouraging residents and visitors alike to embrace the season,” Griffiths added. “Visit Horizon, skate in the Square, cozy up to a wood-burning fire pit with a hot drink, see what’s new in your favourite downtown shops, and enjoy winter in our beautiful city.”

Horizon was created by Olivier Landreville in collaboration with Serge Maheu, produced by Init and is tour produced by Creos, a Quebec-based production company, that specializes in creating immersive and interactive art installations that transcend traditional boundaries, according to the release. This is the third collaboration between the BIA and Quebec-based production company Creos, following the success of Impulse in 2022 and Optik in 2023.
