An inmate at Joyceville Institution has died while in custody, the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) has reported.

According to a media release, dated Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2024, 60-year-old David Blount passed away on Monday, Feb. 26, 2024. Blount was serving a three year sentence for sexual assault which began earlier this year — on Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2024.

The CSC did not provide a cause of death.

“The inmate’s next of kin have been notified,” CSC said.

Due to the short span of time the inmate was in custody before he passed away, Kingstonist reached out CSC to find out if there were any indications of what caused his death.

“I can appreciate your interest in this case, given your comment on time in custody,” Kerry Gatien, Communications & Media Relations for CSC responded.

“That being said, the Privacy Act prevents me from confirming, denying or sharing health-related information.”

Gatien did, however, confirm that cause of death will be determined by the coroner.

In the release, the CSC stated, “As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) will review the circumstances. CSC policy requires that the police and the coroner be notified.”
