#ygkPlaylist: September 2017

This month’s playlist is a wide-ranging mix of tunes to rock out to and music for chilling out. The list contains three bands never before featured on Kingstonist. We have a band that is brand new to the scene and already playing shows with some big names; we have an established pro with over 25 years of experience in the music industry and touring experience across Canada and the United States; and we have an elusive, hard to nail down, but musically prolific and interesting creator of techno beats. All three have something to offer to a variety of tastes so hit play now and get to know these three hometown bands.

Vile Bodies: Vile Bodies formed in 2016 and is made up of Mike Faires, Rory Kite, Elliott Gould, Dylan Hendrick and Chandler Betteridge. While they list themselves as a band from Kingston/Ottawa, they played a number of shows this past summer in the area, including Rock Fest in Quinte alongside The Sheepdogs and ygk’s The Glorious Sons. Their influence is a wide range of musicians including T-Rex, Little Richard, Thin Lizzie, Van Morrison and Joni Mitchell and they refer to their sound as “rock n’ roll and borderline dad-rock”. Find Vile Bodies on Facebook, Bandcamp and Instagram.

Matt Hughes: Matt has a wide range of influences from Metallica to The Beatles and incorporates these different styles into his song-writing. His highly skilled guitar playing, combined with strong vocals and powerful percussion and bass create a straight-ahead rock sound that has impressed audiences throughout his 25 year career. Find Matt Hughes on Facebook, Soundcloud and Youtube.

Lars Dot Tron: This electronica artist is tricky to promote because I couldn’t find anything about him online other than his Soundcloud account. Going by a pseudonym didn’t help either but his tunes are pretty great listening. Here’s how he describes himself: “Making some music with whatever I can. Exploring the highly elastic substance that permeates all space, including the interstices between the particles of matter, and to be the medium whose vibrations constituted light and other electromagnetic radiation. Or whatever…”

Every month, we comb Soundcloud looking for sounds that are unique to Kingston. We are constantly seeking out active musicians to show off to the local community and beyond. If you’re a musician who wants to be included in a future #ygkPlaylist, the first step is to get your original music up on Soundcloud and then follow us. We promise to follow you back, listen to your work and consider it for the monthly #ygkPlaylist.
