#ygkChallenge: Support Children Under 6

Community Foundation of Kingston, Vital Signs, Kingston, OntarioWelcome to Kingstonist’s weekly challenge, dare, resolution or whatever you prefer to call it. Each week we establish a new and ambitious community goal, encouraging our readers, followers, friends and families to step out of their comfort zones and do something great, and hopefully a little out of the ordinary. Consider this your official and personal invitation to join us in completing a small but meaningful achievement. By taking part in this community-wide initiative, we hope to make Kingston a slightly better place to live, work and play. And of course, we also hope that you will feel proud of your contribution and achievement.

This week’s challenge encourages you to:

volunteer with or donate to an organization that supports children under 6. One of the most surprising figures released with the Community Foundation of Kingston and Area’s 2012 Vital Signs report is that 26.6% of Kingston area children are not developmentally ready for school by age 6. According to the report, fewer than 5% of Canadian children at every socio-economic level are born with clinically-detectable limitations to their development. The report indicates that there is a direct correlation to socio-economic factors in society. Many of these factors can be eliminated by becoming smart and caring communities.  Here are a few suggestions for volunteering and donating:
