The World Remembers

City of Kingston will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of The First World War with special programming and events to pay tribute to the more than 1 million lives lost during the war effort. Over 650,000 Canadian men and women served in uniform during the First World War and nearly one in ten Canadians who fought in the War did not return. Programming includes: The World Remembers, The World Remembers: Heritage Resource Lecture Featuring R.H. Civic Ceremony of Remembrance

Wreaths will be laid at the Cross of Sacrifice ahead of the ceremony by community groups, starting at 9:15 a.m. and by veteran and military groups starting at 10:15 a.m.

The bilingual civic service will take place from 10:45 a.m. to 11:20 a.m. Spectators should be in place by 10:40 a.m. to see the parade march on ahead of the service. An ASL Interpreter will be at the civic ceremony. There will be seating for veterans and people with disabilities. The public is invited to watch the laying of the wreaths before the service.

To accommodate the day’s activities:

– King Street will be closed from Barrie to Lower University from 8:15 a.m. to 12 p.m.

– Bagot Street will be closed from West to Barrie from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

– Ontario Street will be closed from West to Gore from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Bells of Peace

At 4 p.m., the bell at St. George’s Cathedral will be tolled 34 times for the 34 members of the Cathedral killed during the First World War. A procession of the Royal Military College of Canada band and an interfaith service (based on the celebration of the armistice) will follow. All faiths are welcome to attend. At the end of the service, at approximately 5 p.m., the main cathedral bell will ring 100 times to mark the centenary of the First World War.

Remembrance Day Ceremony

Join us on Nov. 11/18 as we remember our fallen heroes and celebrate the heroes who remain with us. Ceremony begins at 1030am followed by complimentary Chili and Clam Chowder. Karaoke begins at Noon and continues until 8pm as we sing, dance and celebrate our past and present Military personnel. EVERYONE IS WELCOME!!

Remembrance Day Service

November is a special month here at Arbour Heights in which we celebrate the men and women who risked their lives to fight for our country. Remembrance Day marks the day World War One ended, at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month, back in 1918. Each year we hold programs around the home specifically to thank our Veterans for their heroic services.

We will also be holding special events during Veterans’ Week. If you or your loved one would like to participate please contact the Recreation Staff at ext 516.

Tuesday November 6th, at 5:00pm we will have a Fine Dining event for our Veterans. Please sign up with recreation.

Sunday, November 11th, at 10:30am our Annual Remembrance Day Service will occur in the Town Hall for residents and family. Please join us and wear your poppies to recognize those who have fought for our country.
