Kingston’s Princess Street Promenade

Princess Street Promenade, car-free days in Kingston, OntarioHappy Victoria Day!  If you’re like me, you’ll likely head outside at some point in the day, whether it be for a leisurely stroll or in a last ditched effort to find an licensed outdoor watering hole.  After a brief jaunt downtown this morning, I couldn’t help but notice all of the foot traffic, which rekindled my desire to regularly close off downtown streets and make Kingston pedestrian friendly.  It seems as though this proposal really caught people’s attention, so much so that the city has embraced a grassroots initiative to try out a car-free day on Saturday, July 31st.  Dubbed the Princess Street Promenade (Retail and Street Festival), this initiative has both strong supporters and opponents and we want to know what the numbers say.  Please lock in your vote:

  • No way. It's a dumb idea. (300%, 6 Votes)
  • Still undecided. (100%, 2 Votes)

Are car-free days simply the latest hip eco-initiative, akin to plastic bag and bottled water bans?  Will a one-day street festival amount to any serious economic stimulus for our downtown? Is the Princess Street Promenade really a new idea, or an attempt to rebrand and expand of the under-performing sidewalk sale?  Weigh in with your opinion by submitting a comment or two below.
