Officers from the Frontenac Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are still investigating the cause of a tractor trailer driving off of Highway 401 into a guard rail, which resulted in a fuel spill, and the closure of the busy highway for several hours.
The OPP attended the scene on Highway 401 westbound between Highway 15 and Battersea Road at 11:32 p.m. on Tuesday, Mar. 19 2019. Their investigation found that the transport was travelling westbound on the highway when, for reasons under investigation, the vehicle left the road and collided with a metal guard rail. The transport then struck the concrete median, blocking the highway.
The incident resulted in a large quantity of diesel fuel leaking onto the highway. Kingston Fire and Rescue, with direction from the Ministry of the Environment, contained the leak.
“The driver of the tractor trailer did not require medical attention and no charges are anticipated,” the OPP said in a press release on Wednesday, Mar. 20, 2019.
The Ministry of Transportation will conduct guard rail repairs at a later time.
