Remembering Roelie Hiddema (nee Reitsma)

Roelie Hiddema (nee Reitsma)

Called home by the Lord on Monday evening, April 15, 2024 in her 91st year, Roelofke (Roelie, Ruby) passed peacefully at Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital. Widow and beloved wife for 57 years of Eelke (2020). Mother of John (Penny) of Toronto, Peter (Alicia) of Richmond Hill, and Eric (Mona) of Calgary. Proud and beloved Grandma of Evan, Clara, Marc, Jasmine, Jade and Kai. Predeceased by her husband Eelke, her parents and two brothers. She was the last surviving member of her family.

She was born in 1934 in the town of Marum, The Netherlands and immigrated to Canada with her husband Eelke soon after they married in 1962. She built a life around her family and church community. She was a long-standing member of First Christian Reformed Church in Kingston, continuing to attend services online after moving to Richmond Hill to be closer to her children.

Roelie delighted in her grandchildren, lighting up at seeing them and asking every day, and into her last hours, about their well-being. With warmth, acceptance, and love, she lived what she taught us as kids, grandchildren, and adults.

She loved the flowers and fresh vegetables from her garden, and every Spring, she watched to see which birds would make their home around our family home. She and Eelke enjoyed many happy times in the outdoors together through walking, camping and swimming, often in Charleston Lake Provincial Park.

There will be a visitation held at the James Reid Funeral Home (1900 John Counter Blvd. Kingston, ON) on Friday May 3rd, 2024 from 5-8 PM. The funeral will be Saturday May 4th, 2024 at 11:30 AM at the First Christian Reformed Church (310 Kingscourt Ave, Kingston, ON).

In lieu of flowers, donations to the University Hospitals Kingston Foundation would be appreciated.
