Jacqueline Vivian Elmer Macey
June 19, 1924 – August 27, 2023
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jacqueline (“Jackie”) Vivian Elmer Macey, 99 years young, of Kingston, Ontario on August 27, 2023.
Jackie was born in Flint, Michigan, USA, to John and Florence Elmer on June 19, 1924. She moved to Canada at age seven, and charmed everyone with her signature wit and vivacious personality. Jackie applied her meticulous attention to detail in her over 30-year career as a secretary for the Department of National Defense. Jackie maintained close community ties through her long-standing membership to the Anglican Church of Canada and the Cataraqui Golf and Country Club.
Jackie married the love of her life, Hubert (“Hub”) Macey on January 29, 1965, and the two enjoyed an adventure-filled romance until Hub’s untimely passing on March 27, 2008. Jackie worked tirelessly to keep Hub’s memory alive – both amongst friends and family through shared memories and stories, and through her considerable charitable givings in Hub’s name.
Music sustained Jackie throughout her life. It gave her comfort and transported her to happy times of memories evoked in the lyrics and with those she loved. One of Jackie’s dear friends, who cared for her beauty needs, captured her personality in a message last year. She writes: “Independent, saucy, successful and blessed!”
Jackie spent her last 14 years in the constant company of Arthur, her faithful Bedlington Terrier. Arthur took his role of therapy dog/confidante/front door watchman very seriously, never missing the opportunity to alert Jackie to incoming mail or visitors. Arthur was right next to Jackie as she drew her final breath, perhaps the only true witness to a soul’s next destination (he’s not telling).
We would like to extend our most heartfelt thanks and admiration to the doctors and staff of the Providence Care Hospital for their compassionate care of Jackie in her final chapter.
A graveside ceremony will be held at Cataraqui Cemetery on Friday, September 1 at 1200 hours or noon. Please meet at the Cemetery office, entrance off of John Counter Blvd by 11:45 am. Celebration of Life to follow at a later date.
