Victor Justin Smida

April 13, 1953 – October 31, 2023

Victor Justin Smida, born on April 13, 1953, in Port Hope, Ontario, passed away on October 31, 2023 in Peterborough Ontario. He was a beloved father, son, and brother, an adored teacher, accomplished astronomer, and avid motorcycle enthusiast.

He is predeceased by his father Victor Smida (July 25, 2017) and his brother Paul Joseph Smida (November 16, 2004). He is survived by his mother Mary Anne Smida (nee Tallo), his brothers Francis Edward Smida and Robert Stephen Smida, his sisters Lydia Lorraine Smida, Mary Ellen Smida, and Margaret Joan Smida, his sons Stefan Viktor Smida and Peter Justin Smida (Kirsten).

Victor, known to friends and family as Vic, was an incredible, kind-hearted, and humble man of deep conviction. He possessed the rare quality of making those around him feel safe and seen. His gentle spirit and warm knowing smile left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Vic’s love and enthusiasm for science and the cosmos were infectious. As an accomplished astronomer, he shared his passion with those around him, sparking a sense of wonder and curiosity in the minds of his students, friends, and family. Vic’s dedication to teaching, and his ability to make complex concepts understandable, made him a cherished mentor and educator.

In addition to his passion for science, Vic loved his motorcycle. He found solace on the open road, riding solo or in the company of family and friends.

Vic leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and a thirst for knowledge that will continue to inspire all those who were fortunate enough to be touched by his life. 

A Celebration of Life and service to honor Vic’s memory will be announced at a later date.
