Contraband and unauthorized items were seized at Collins Bay Institution earlier this week, as the result of a suspected drone drop, the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) said in a media release.

The seizure — the fifth one at this institution since 2024 began — took place at the multi-level security federal facility on Thursday, Feb. 29, 2024, and is credited to “the vigilance of staff members,” according to the release.

“The items seized included an edged weapon, cell phones and [cell phone] accessories. The total estimated institutional value of this seizure is approximately $10,500,” the CSC reported.

According to the release, the CSC uses a number of tools to prevent drugs from entering its institutions. These tools include ion scanners and detector dogs to search buildings, personal property, inmates, and visitors, the CSC noted, adding that it works “in partnership with police to take action against those who attempt to introduce” such items at federal prisons.

“CSC has set up a telephone tip line for all federal institutions so that it may receive additional information about activities relating to security at CSC institutions. These activities may be related to drug use or trafficking that may threaten the safety and security of visitors, inmates, and staff members working at CSC institutions,” the organization stated.

“The toll-free number, 1-866-780-3784, helps ensure that the information shared is protected and that callers remain anonymous.”

It should be noted that, at the same time, CSC’s Joyceville Institution in Kingston’s east end is also facing issues with contraband and unauthorized items being found on prison property. In those cases, CSC also suspects drone drops led to the items entering the federal property. Two such seizures occurred in the past week, bringing the number of seizures of contraband/unauthorized items at that institution in 2024 to 10.
