Wayward drive shaft leads to multiple damaged vehicles on Highway 401

Drivers travelling westbound on Highway 401 between the Highway 15 and Montreal Street exits this morning may have been surprised to see a drive shaft roll across live lanes of traffic, striking four vehicles.

At approximately 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Mar. 26, 2024, a commercial vehicle had its metal drive shaft fall out, according to a release from the Frontenac County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP.) The vehicle was immediately disabled onto the shoulder, but the drive shaft was not so easily thwarted.

“The drive shaft rolled across live lanes of traffic and was struck by four other vehicles causing different levels of damage including bent rims and flat tires. In total, three vehicles were towed including the disabled commercial vehicle,” the OPP stated.

According to the release, traffic lanes were slowed until the debris and damaged vehicles were removed. A Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO) inspector attended the scene and conducted a vehicle inspection at the roadside.

“The company and the driver were given charges for commercial motor vehicle issues of operating an unsafe vehicle under the Highway Traffic Act,” the OPP concluded.
