An accused murderer was likely not in a celebratory mood as he marked his 30th birthday — Thursday, Dec. 21, 2023 — behind bars, still without having met with his defence team.
Sebastian Johnston appeared on Thursday via video from Central East Correctional Centre in Lindsay, before Justice of the Peace Ruth Campbell. Unfortunately, and without explanation, his lawyer did not appear.
Johnston is accused of the first-degree murder of Kevin Saviour Camilleri, 59.
Members of the Frontenac Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Detachment arrested and charged Johnston with the murder on Friday, Dec.1, 2023. At that time Camilleri’s body had not been found.
Then on the evening of Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2023, the OPP released a statement confirming that members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Frontenac Detachment Crime Unit, with the assistance of the OPP Emergency Response Team (ERT), had located Camilleri’s body. Camilleri had last been seen on November 9 in the Sharbot Lake area.
At a previous court appearance on Thursday, Dec. 7, 2023, lawyer Tania Zhang appeared via video on behalf of Jeffrey Langevin, explaining that their team had attempted to schedule an access to defence call with Johnston but that “the line did not go through,” meaning they had not been able to reach their client. Therefore, the team asked Justice of the Peace Jack Chiang for a two-week adjournment. Chiang ordered Johnston to reappear on Thursday, Dec. 21, 2023.
Justice of the Peace Campbell noted, however, that it appeared in Johnston’s file that he had yet to meet with Langevin or his team. She asked Johnson when he would like to reappear for an update and advised him to contact his lawyer in the meantime. The next appearance is scheduled for early January.
UPDATE (Friday, Jan. 5. 2024, at 1:17 p.m.):
Sebastian Johnston was never brought to his video court appointment on Thursday, Jan. 4, 2023 which was scheduled to occur at 1 p.m. at Central East Correction Centre where he is incarcerated. After learning from a representative for Johnston’s legal team that there was a planned crown pre-trial meeting scheduled in Johnston’s case for Jan. 17, 2024, the Justice of the Peace ordered a bench warrant with discretion for a court appearance on later this month.
