For many people, grabbing a cup of coffee at a Tim Hortons on the way to work is simply part of their day-to-day routine – but what if doing so could help send a local youth to college or university?
What about a pizza every month for a year, all in the name of higher education for an area student in need?
These are the kinds of unique items up for bids on the Family and Children’s Services of Frontenac, Lennox and Addington (FCSFLA)’s Futures Fund Auction. Running until Saturday, Sept. 8, 2018, the Futures Fund Auction is an online auction with all proceeds going directly to FCSFLA’s Futures Fund. The 123-year-old Futures Fund gives bursaries to help send kids in foster care to college or university. This year alone FCSFLA awarded $50,000 in bursaries to 12 area youth, and the Futures Fund Auction will help to ensure more students receive the bursaries next year.
What’s more is the Futures Fund Auction boasts a huge variety of fun, interesting, and useful items, some of which you won’t find anywhere else. Items on the auction block include lunch with Queen’s University Principal Daniel Woolf, a custom birthday song written and performed by local rock band Bellfonix, lunch and a tour of parliament with MP Mike Bossio, and a homemade butterscotch meringue pie made by none other than MP Mark Gerretsen.
“We’re auctioning off some things you won’t be able to find anywhere else, like tea with the Mayor of Kingston, and a consult on your next book choice with the Chief Librarian of Kingston. Plus, there’s barbecues, trips, services, and more,” said Steve Woodman, executive director of FCSFLA, in a press release.
“We have some great auction items, but we also have a great need. Education is so important to the kids we serve. We’re asking people to give generously.”
Other auction items include personalized portrait packages, a helicopter tour of the 1000 islands, an autographed Robert Munch book, romantic getaways and family trip packages, and a variety of gift certificates to enjoy local dining, theatre, movies, and more.
