Two Kingston residents charged for drug trafficking

A routine traffic stop on Highway 401 has resulted two Kingston residents being arrested and charged for drug trafficking offences.

The incident took place on Tuesday, May 12, 2020 when officers from the Lennox and Addington County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police were patrolling on Highway 401 near Odessa. At approximately 4 p.m., an officer on patrol noticed the suspect vehicle, which was travelling eastbound with unregistered plates. The officer stopped the vehicle, and, upon approaching it to speak with those inside, observed drugs in plain view.

As a result, 22-year-old Chelsey Merkley of Kingston has been charged with:

  • Trafficking a Schedule 1 substance – Crystal Methamphetamine
  • Driving while under suspension
  • Operating a motor vehicle without insurance
  • Trafficking a Schedule 4 substance – Other drugs

Additionally, 26-year-old Cecil Clayton Merkley Jr. of Kingston has been charged with:

  • Trafficking of a Schedule 1 substance – Crystal methamphetamine
  • Trafficking a Schedule 4 substance – Other drugs

Both of the accused parties are scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Napanee in July 2020.
