UPDATE: Two sent to hospital in Princess Street fire

UPDATE (Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2022, 11:35 a.m.):
Kingston Police have released further details on the incident that ended in a fire at a motel on Princess Street in the early morning of Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2022.

According to a media release, police arrived on scene around 12:30 a.m. in response to a report of an altercation within a room at a west end motel.

“Upon arriving at the motel, officers found a motel room to be fully engulfed in flames,” police said. “The responding officers were made aware of an individual who was trapped inside the room. Police conducted scene management while members of Kingston Fire and Rescue worked to extinguish the fire and extract the individual from the room.”

Police said that the individual was recovered from the room by Kingston Fire and transported to a local hospital in stable condition.

An earlier statement from Kingston Fire and Rescue noted that two individuals were transported to hospital. Kingstonist inquired with Kingston Police regarding this discrepency, and police confirmed that two individuals were, indeed, taken to hospital, however, both were treated for minor injuries and released shortly thereafter.

Kingston Police have charged the 43-year-old individual, who had been transported to hospital, with:

  • arson
  • mischief
  • assault with a weapon
  • utter threats

Upon being released from hospital, the individual was transported to Kingston Police headquarters and is scheduled to attend a bail hearing today, Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2022.

Members of the Kingston Police remain at scene and this investigation is on-going. Kingston Fire and Rescue said they will not be commenting on this incident further, as the investigation is now in the hands of Kingston Police.

Two people have been hospitalized due to injuries sustained in an early morning fire at a motel on Princess Street on Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2022.

Crews responded shortly before 12:30 a.m. to a report of a structure fire within Room 26 of the Seven Oakes Motel. The fire was quickly knocked down, however, two occupants found inside suffered serious injuries, were treated by paramedics, and were transported to hospital.

“Early this morning, fire crews responded to a reported structure fire at the 2300 block of Princess Street,” said Kingston Fire & Rescue in a statement. “The fire has been extinguished. Two individuals [were] transported to hospital,” the statement confirmed.

Damage to the affected unit is extensive, while adjacent units appear to have little to no damage.

Kingston Police remained on scene as of 7:30 a.m.
