Tweed man facing attempted murder, firearms charges in hunting cabin incident near Marmora

A Tweed resident has been arrested and charged following an incident where shots were fired at a hunting cabin near Marmora that prompted a Special Investigations Unit (SIU) investigation.

In a media release, police state that on Dec. 14, shortly before 4 p.m. members of the Central Hastings Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a request for assistance at an address on Twin Sister Lakes Road.

“An individual barricaded themselves inside the home and shots were fired from inside,” police explain.

With the assistance of the OPP’s Emergency Response Team (ERT), Tactics and Rescue Unit (TRU), Canine Unit, Aviation Services and Crisis Negotiators, the individual was taken into custody.

According to a post to X by the SIU, preliminary investigation suggests that the 48-year-old man was shot first with an Anti-Riot Weapon Enfield (ARWEN), a less-lethal firearm.

The suspect then reportedly shot at police, and an officer shot the man with a regular firearm, according to an SIU media release. The suspect was arrested and taken to hospital in Kingston via ambulance.

“As a result of the interaction, the suspect did sustain a non-life-threatening injury,” OPP state in their release. 

Jason Bedore, age 48 from Tweed, has been charged with the following offences:

  • Attempt to commit murder using firearm
  • Careless use of firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition
  • Possession of firearm or ammunition

Charges have not been proven in court.

The individual was held for a bail hearing before the Ontario Court of Justice in Belleville. 

The investigation continues by the Central Hastings Crime Unit, under the direction of the Criminal Investigation Branch. 

As a result of the SIU investigation, OPP say they will not be able to provide any further information on this matter at this time.
