Highway 401 westbound has been closed from Highway 32 to Joyceville Road as crews respond to a transport fire that occurred just before 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Mar. 27, 2019.
The transport became fully engulfed in flames on the shoulder of the westbound 401, the cause of which has yet to be determined. Emergency crews closed the westbound highway shortly thereafter, directing travellers to use the Emergency Detour Route to Highway 2.
Leeds and Thousand Islands Fire Department responded, and the fire has been put out, but investigation and cleanup of the site may take some time. It appears at this time that no injuries occurred, as none have been reported and an eyewitness reported that the driver of the transport got out safely. Frontenac Paramedic Services attended the scene as a precaution.

UPDATE (5:30 p.m.): One of the two westbound lanes of Highway 401 has now been reopened. The Ministry of the Environment has been requested to the site of the incident to clean up a fuel spill.
