Those who travel Gardiners Road near Highway 401 should be prepared for slowdowns for the next year, or close to it.

The City of Kingston has announced intersection upgrades where Gardiners Road meets Centennial Drive and Creekford Road will begin this week and conclude in spring 2025. A brief shutdown of the work will take place over winter, according to a release from the City, dated Thursday, May 30, 2024.

The City noted that during construction the intersection will remain open to traffic, however, there will be speed and lane reductions, or lane shifts to facilitate work. Traffic impacts will be shared through the City’s weekly road report, and Kingstonist’s weekly traffic article as well.

“This intersection is a critical access to the City for drivers coming off the 401,” said Tarita Diczki, Project Manager with the City’s Department of Transportation Services. “While there may be some impacts during construction the completion of the project will improve traffic flow in the area.”

According to the release, this project will bring the intersection up to the standards required by the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) for intersections located near a 400-series highway. Once the upgrade is complete, Centennial Drive from Gardiners Road to Venture Drive will be opened allowing more traffic to commute through the Gardiners Road area, the City shared.

Asked when the construction will actually begin, the City of Kingston shared that pre-work, such as on-site permit work, commenced this week, and said that active construction will commence after the pre-work and is anticipated to start within the next two weeks.
