The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) has announced the seventh seizure of contraband and unauthorized items at the multi-level security correctional institution on the east edge of Kingston.

According to the federal correctional authority, contraband and unauthorized items were seized on the grounds of Joyceville Institution on Monday, Feb. 12, 2024. The packages containing contraband and unauthorized items were located “as the result of the vigilance of staff members,” and are believed to have ended up on the prison property as a result of a suspected drone drop, CSC said in a press release two days later.

“The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) uses a number of tools to prevent drugs from entering its institutions. These tools include ion scanners and detector dogs to search buildings, personal property, inmates, and visitors,” the federal organization said.

“CSC has heightened measures to prevent contraband and unauthorized items from entering its institutions in order to help ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone. CSC also works in partnership with the police to take action against those who attempt to introduce contraband or unauthorized items into correctional institutions.”

According to CSC, the packages seized on February 12 contained cannabis and tobacco and had an estimated institutional value of $27,500.

The federal correctional authority has a telephone tip line to receive information about activities relating to security at CSC institutions, including activities related to drug use or trafficking that “may threaten the safety and security of visitors, inmates, and staff members” working at federal prisons, CSC said, noting that information shared on the tip line is protected and callers can remain anonymous. The tip line can be reached at 1-866-780-3784.

The last report of contraband and/or unauthorized items being seized at Joyceville Institution occurred on Friday, Feb. 8, 2024, when Kingston Police intercepted an alleged drone drop.
