Tanner Drive accident results in widespread power outage

Between 3,000 and 5,500 homes and business were left without power after the boom arm of a delivery truck struck power lines on Tanner Drive.

Just after 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 28, 2018, the boom arm of the truck stuck and pulled down power lines, resulting in both the widespread power outage and a vegetation fire at the scene, where Kingston Fire and Rescue attended to promptly snuff the flames, and Hydro One crews and a towing company removed the truck’s damaged boom arm.

Both Utilities Kingston and Hydro One customers suffered outages throughout the west end, central Kingston, and the downtown core. While many Utilities Kingston customers’ power was restored by 1 p.m., Hydro One estimates power will be restored to their customers by 9 p.m.

Tanner Drive remained closed by Kingston Police as of 3 p.m., affecting two stops on Kingston Transit’s Route 11, which remain out of service.

No injuries occurred as a result of the incident.
