A Sydenham resident is facing multiple charges after officers of the Lennox and Addington (L&A) County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a domestic disturbance incident.

Shortly after midnight on Thursday, Feb. 29, 2024, officers from the L&A County OPP received a report of a domestic disturbance incident.

According to a release from the OPP, the accused had driven their vehicle to the residence and was knocking on the door. When the resident refused to open the door, the accused reportedly smashed the front window in an attempt to gain access.

Police said the accused then remembered that they had a key to the front door, let themselves in, and began yelling and shouting at the residents inside. The accused refused to leave and continued to drink while inside the residence.

“Upon police arrival, officers located the accused outside sitting in the driver’s seat of their vehicle. The accused was arrested and transported back to the Napanee detachment for further testing. There were two adults and a child inside the residence at the time of the incident. No one was injured,” the OPP stated.

As a result of this investigation, L&A County OPP has charged a 24-year-old person from Sydenham, with:

  • Operation of a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol/drugs
  • Operation of a motor vehicle while impaired with a blood alcohol concentration exceeding the legal limit
  • Mischief – Domestic

The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Greater Napanee in March 2024. The accused’s licence was suspended for 90 days, and the vehicle was impounded for seven days. They will be responsible for all related fees and fines.

The OPP noted that due to the domestic nature of the incident, the name of the accused will not be released to protect the identity of the victim.

“Victims in abusive relationships are not alone. If you are in an abusive relationship or know someone who is, there are local resources here to help,” OPP said.

The OPP urged victims to contact one of the following local resources:

  • Victim Services Hastings, Prince Edward, Lennox & Addington: 1-866-680-9972
  • Assaulted women’s helpline: 1-866-863-0511
