‘Suspected drone drop’ leads to contraband seizure at Joyceville Institution

A package containing contraband was seized at Joyceville Institution, a multi-security prison in Kingston’s east end, over the weekend.

According to the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC), the seizure was “the result of the vigilance of staff members,” and was made on Saturday, Jun. 25, 2022.

The seized items included 84 grams of cannabis, 75 grams of shatter (cannabis concentrate), as well as cell phones and accessories, according to a release from the CSC dated Monday, Jun. 27, 2022. According to the CSC, this seizure was the result of a suspected drone drop.

In the release, CSC said that the organization uses a number of tools to prevent drugs from entering its institutions. These tools include ion scanners and detector dogs to search buildings, personal property, inmates and visitors.

“The Correctional Service of Canada has measures in place to prevent contraband and unauthorized items from entering its institutions in order to help ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone,” the national correctional authority said. “CSC also works in partnership with the police to take action against those who attempt to introduce contraband and/or unauthorized items into correctional institutions.”
