Special Investigations Unit lays sexual assault charge against Kingston Police officer
A Kingston Police officer has been charged with sexual assault after the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) completed their investigation.
SIU Director Tony Loparco has reasonable grounds to believe that the local police officer committed a criminal offence in relation to an incident that occurred between March 1 and April 30, 2017. The SIU was contacted by Kingston Police on November 2, 2017 regarding a complaint made by a female citizen against one of their officers.
As a result of the SIU investigation, Constable Peter Shaun Trafford has been charged with one count of sexual assault (contrary to section 271 of the Criminal Code).
Trafford is required to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on Wellington Street in Kingston on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2019.
“The matter is now properly before the courts. In consideration of the fair trial interests of the accused, the SIU will make no further comment pertaining to this investigation,” SIU said in a press release dated Friday, Dec. 21, 2018.
The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
