During Waste Reduction Week, October 17 to 23, South Frontenac Township has launched a new mobile app, South Frontenac Recycles, to make it easy for residents to stay informed about waste and recycling collection programs.

According to a release from South Frontenac Township, the app is being launched in October, which is also Canada’s first Circular Economy Month which invites Canadians to learn more about the circular economy and to take action to reduce waste and recycle.

The app sends custom reminders based on a resident’s address so they never have to miss a collection day again, the Township shared. It will also send alerts when the schedule changes due to holidays or bad weather.

One helpful feature is the Waste Wizard, an easy search tool that allows residents to enter any item and see if it can be reused, recycled, composted or picked up as garbage, according to the release. There are more than 250 items listed in the wizard, with more being added all the time, the Township said. Residents can even suggest items to be added to the wizard.

“The residents of our Township already do a great job recycling, but now it will be even easier to recycle and stay on top of garbage pick up and recycling schedules,” said Kyle Bolton, Director of Public Services. “We’re hoping the Waste Wizard feature will result in more items being recycled, less waste and fewer misses in blue boxes.”

“We’re very excited to see this app roll out,” added Mayor Ron Vandewal. “The Township is committed to sustainable initiatives and diverting as much waste as possible from our landfills, plus it’s a great service for our residents.”

To download the mobile app, search for “South Frontenac Recycles” in the app store on Apple or Android smartphones.

For those who don’t have an Apple or Android smartphone, the Township said individuals can also visit the Solid Waste page on the South Frontenac Township website and enter their home address to:

  • Sign up for waste collection reminders by email, phone call, or text message.
  • Download a collection schedule into iCal, Google calendar or Microsoft Outlook calendar.
  • Print a collection schedule.
