A local driver has been charged after fatally injuring a pedestrian north of Sydenham in January of this year.

According to a release from the Frontenac County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), police laid the charge in connection with a fatal collision that occurred on Bedford Road, just north of the village of Sydenham.

The incident took place at approximately 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 5, 2024, when a vehicle collided with a pedestrian who had been walking along the shoulder of the roadway, police detailed.

“The pedestrian was fatally injured. The driver stayed at the scene and assisted officers with the investigation,” OPP said.

As a result of the investigation across the five months since then, 38-year-old Jordan Ward from South Frontenac Township has been charged under the Highway Traffic Act with careless driving causing death.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Kingston in July 2024.

According to the release, Frontenac detachment members were assisted in the investigation by an OPP Collision Reconstructionist, the Technical Collision Investigation Team, South Frontenac Fire Department, Frontenac Paramedics, and the Office of the Chief Coroner.

“The Ontario Provincial Police is committed to public safety on our highways and preventing serious collisions through visible patrol and enforcement initiatives,” police said.

Police did not identify the deceased individual.
