SIU terminates investigation of incident involving Kingston Police

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has closed the case on an investigation into the hospitalization of a 38-year-old man following his arrest by Kingston Police officers.

According to a release from the SIU, on the morning of Monday, Apr. 11, 2022, Kingston Police officers attended a residence to locate a man wanted in relation to outstanding warrants. When officers located a man matching the description of the wanted individual, SIU stated that the man fled and the officers gave chase.

SIU reported that, in the course of the struggle that marked his arrest, the man consumed a quantity of methamphetamine. He was taken to hospital, kept under observation for a period, and discharged without having suffered serious injury within the terms of the SIU’s mandate, according to the release

Based on the SIU’s preliminary inquiries, including a review of the man’s medical records, the Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Joseph Martino, concluded that it was apparent that the SIU was without statutory jurisdiction to proceed with an investigation. The file has been closed.
