The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has closed the case on an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the arrest of a 58-year-old man in March of 2022.

According to the SIU, the man reported the incident to the government agency in July of 2022, after he visited the hospital for discomfort in his left hand.

The man was handcuffed and arrested by Kingston Police on the morning of Sunday, Mar. 6, 2022, after police responded to a report of an altercation between two individuals in the area of Division and Benson Streets.

The Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Joseph Martino, terminated the investigation, noting that the medical evidence indicated that the man did not suffer a serious injury within the mandate of the SIU.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigated the conduct of police officers that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault, and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians.
