Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is currently investigating a fatal shooting incident that occurred in Stone Mills Township last night.

At approximately 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2019, the Lennox and Addington County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a call regarding a single vehicle collision in the area of 5 Lake Road and County Road 14. A resident in the area had seen the vehicle in a ditch and, upon approaching the scene, the man from the vehicle told the resident to go away, indicating that he had guns. The resident left the area and called 911 to report the incident.

Responding officers arrived on the scene and one officer became involved in an interaction with the man, according to SIU. The officer discharged his firearm multiple times, and the man was struck multiple times. The 48-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

As a result, three investigators and three forensic investigators from SIU have been assigned to the incident.

“At this time, one subject officer and five witness officers have been designated,” SIU said in a press release on Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2019, referring to the officers involved in the incident. A post-mortem has been scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 14, 2019 in Kingston.

Anyone who may have information about this incident is asked to contact the lead SIU investigator at 1-800-787-8529. The SIU is also urging anyone who may have video evidence related to this incident to upload that footage through the SIU website.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
