The province’s Special Investigations Unit says it is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 22-year-old man who was shot by Kingston Police earlier today after he went on a stabbing rampage in downtown Kingston.
At approximately 2 p.m. on September 12, 2019, in the area of Queen Street and Bagot Street, a Kingston Police officer came upon a 22-year-old man stabbing another individual. The officer intervened and additional police officers arrived shortly thereafter.
During that interaction between officers and the suspect, one officer discharged his firearm, resulting in the man being struck. As the man then began to stab himself with the knife, a second police officer discharged a taser at the man. The male was pronounced dead at the scene.
One of the stabbing victims, a 40-year-old local man, has also been pronounced dead in the incident. He has not been identified pending notification of next-of-kin.
Four SIU investigators and three forensic investigators have been assigned to this incident. At this time, two subject Kingston Police officers and one witness officer have been designated. The post-mortem is scheduled for tomorrow morning.
The SIU is urging anyone who may have information regarding this incident to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529. The Unit is also urging anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website.
