SIU investigating after woman’s sudden death in Kingston

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate and is currently investigating the circumstances around the death of a 59-year-old woman in Kingston.
An independent government agency, the SIU investigates the incidents involving law enforcement officials that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault, and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. In this case, it is the death of a person while police were present and on the job that has caused the SIU to investigate.
According to the SIU, their agency began investigating after the woman passed away on the evening of Tuesday, May 23, 2023. At approximately 5:45 p.m. that day, Kingston Police responded to a call about a woman in distress at an apartment building off Bath Road in central Kingston. Officers arrived on scene and attempted to communicate with the woman, the SIU said in a press release the following day. However, approximately 15 minutes later, a 911 call was received “about a woman who fell from a balcony.” Notified of this, police exited the building and located the woman, who was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The SIU has assigned two investigators and two forensic investigators to the case, and a post-mortem examination is scheduled for Thursday, May 25, 2023.
The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or to fill out a witness form online at https://siu.on.ca/en/appeals.php.
Additionally, the SIU said, if you or someone you know is an affected person in need of support, please call the Affected Persons Program General Referral line at 1-877-641-1897, or visit siu.on.ca/en/apc.php for more information.
