Severe thunderstorm warning for Kingston and area
Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Kingston, Odessa, Frontenac Islands, Napanee, Consecon, Picton and Sandbanks Park.
At 10:17 p.m., Environment Canada meteorologists say they are tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing strong wind gusts and heavy rain.
This line of severe thunderstorms is located from Strathcona to Picton, moving east at 45 km/h.
Severe thunderstorms will be in the Kingston region around 10:30 PM.
Locations impacted include:
Kingston, Lake on the Mountain Provincial Park, Odessa, Dorland, Violet, Bath, Millhaven, Amherst Island, Collins Bay, Marysville, Colonel By Lake and Wolfe Island.
Heavy downpours are likely to cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop.
“Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles,” says Environment Canada. “Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!”
Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are likely to produce or are producing one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.
The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.
