Road rage incident on County Road 4 leads to multiple weapons charges

A Stone Mills resident is facing multiple weapons-related charges after the Lennox and Addington (L&A) County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were notified of a road rage incident in Loyalist Township.

Shortly before 8 p.m. on Sunday, April 14, 2024, L&A County OPP were dispatched to a reported firearms call on County Road 4 near Highway 401. According to a release from the OPP, the caller was reporting a road rage incident where a male pointed a handgun at them and fired a shot at their vehicle.

“Based on the sound. the caller believed the firearm to be a BB gun, but could not verify,” the OPP detailed.

According to the release, police located the suspect vehicle a short time later. The male driver was arrested and a BB gun was seized by police.

As a result of this investigation, OPP has charged Daniel Vanderwerf, age 56, of Stone Mills, with:

  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
  • Pointing a firearm
  • Imitation firearm – use while committing an offence
  • Discharge air gun or pistol with intent
  • Dangerous driving

Vanderwerf was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Greater Napanee in June 2024.

  • I used to have a horrible case of road rage. Then around 10 years ago I saw a segment on 60 Minutes, I think it was, from Georgia, USA, about an incident whereby two SUVs got into very aggressive driving because one passed the other and cut them off. As one of the SUVs was again pulling out to pass, a van with five family members pulled out from the right hand side of the road, unseen by the SUV passing the other. The passing SUV t-boned the van, killing all five persons in the van, and the passenger and child in the SUV. Both road rage drivers survived. This was like a light switching on for me. I still get upset, but keep it in the car and do not drive aggressively at all. Ever. Just the thought of that family being wiped out needlessly keeps me in check.
