Those who travel Highway 15 during their morning commute were surprised to find the roadways closed around Codes Corners, north of Highway 401 on the morning of Monday, May 27, 2024.

According to Kingston Fire and Rescue (KFR), crews responded to a reported propane leak in the 1900 block of Highway 15 early this morning.

“On arrival, fire crews made contact with the facility manager to determine that a propane leak was coming from the equipment compartment at the base of a bulk fuel tank,” KFR detailed through the City of Kingston’s Communications team, in response to Kingstonist’s inquiries.

“Fire crews secured the area with the assistance of Kingston Police.”

Kingstonist inquired with Kingston Police as to their role in the incident. In response, Constable Ash Gutheinz, a Media Relations Officer, confirmed that Kingston Police were asked by KFR to attend the scene to assist with evacuating residents from the immediate area.

“Kingston Police received the call to assist KFR just after 5:00 a.m. this morning,” he explained.

At approximately 7:30 a.m., the Ontario Provincial Police shared an update on X (formerly Twitter), stating that the northbound lanes of Highway 15 were closed “just north” of Highway 401. “Expect delays with a large number of emergency vehicles present,” the OPP reported.

Shortly after, crews located the shut-off valve and a service technician was contacted, KFR noted.

“Once that technician arrived on scene and determined the area was safe, fire crews left the scene and the evacuation order was lifted,” KFR said.

Gutheinz confirmed that the roads which had been shut down were reopened just after 8 a.m.
