Thanks to concerned citizens, an impaired driver has been taken off the roads after piloting a vehicle erratically in downtown Kingston.

According to a release from Kingston Police, at approximately 8:55 p.m. on Tuesday, Mar. 26, 2024, a concerned citizen contacted police and advised that they had seen a motor vehicle driving on lawns and almost striking a building on Stuart Street. They also reported that the vehicle was driving on a flat tire, police noted.

“A second concerned citizen advised police that they had nearly been hit by this same vehicle, which had been driving on a flat tire on the wrong side of the roadway while advancing toward oncoming vehicular traffic on Albert Street near Princess Street,” police reported.

According to the release, officers quickly attempted to intercept this vehicle and located it stopped in the middle of the roadway in the 400 block of Albert Street. There, police observed that the lone occupant of the vehicle was sitting in the driver’s seat. Reportedly, there was also a jack under the car on the side of the flat tire and police said the accused appeared to be getting ready to change it.

“The officer made observations that the accused was impaired by alcohol,” Kingston Police stated.

The accused was arrested and subsequently transported to police headquarters where they provided two breath samples. They were found to have nearly two times the legal limit of alcohol in their system, according to police.

Ethan Thompson, a 23-year-old from Mallorytown, was charged with impaired operation of a conveyance (vehicle) and impaired operation of a conveyance while exceeding blood alcohol concentration.

Police said Thompson was later released with a future court date. Their driver’s licence is automatically suspended for 90 days and they will face a one-year suspension if convicted. The vehicle was seized and impounded for seven days, with the accused being responsible for all fees and fines.
