As Friday turned into Saturday in the early morning hours, Kingston Police received reports of a shooting in central Kingston, in an area close to St. Lawrence College (SLC).

According to police, the shooting occurred at approximately 2 a.m. on Saturday, Jul. 29, 2023, on Curtis Crescent. Curtis Crescent is only accessible by vehicle off of Portsmouth Avenue and is located immediately north of SLC.

The victim of the shooting had been driving to the location in a vehicle. In the vehicle were a few passengers, all of whom were known to the victim, police said in a press release just before 5 p.m. on Monday, Jul. 31, 2023.

As the group was exiting the vehicle, the accused shooter – who had been seated in the back seat – “proceeded to fire a round from a gun,” police said. That bullet struck the victim, who was still in the front seat of the vehicle.

“The accused party then fled from the scene,” Kingston Police detailed. “Members of the Kingston Police Major Crime Unit attended the scene to commence an investigation, and the accused was located and arrested a short time later, still in the area of Curtis Crescent. The accused was then transported to police headquarters where they were held to attend a bail hearing.”

As a result, Toronto resident Jaymes Roettger, age 18, was charged with:

  • Aggravated assault
  • Possession a restricted weapon as an unlicensed person
  • Possession of a loaded, unregulated firearm
  • Pointing a firearm
  • Using a firearm to commit an indictable offence
  • Discharging a firearm with the intent to wound
  • Two counts of possession of a dangerous weapon
  • Carrying a concealed weapon.

According to Kingston Police, the victim was seriously injured and “attended the hospital.” Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Detective Joel Fisher at 613-549-4660 ext. 6338 or via email at [email protected], or Detective Sergeant Chad Parslow at 613-549-4660 ext. 6245 or via email at [email protected].
