Police arrest 18-year-old following shooting in central Kingston

As Friday turned into Saturday in the early morning hours, Kingston Police received reports of a shooting in central Kingston, in an area close to St. Lawrence College (SLC).
According to police, the shooting occurred at approximately 2 a.m. on Saturday, Jul. 29, 2023, on Curtis Crescent. Curtis Crescent is only accessible by vehicle off of Portsmouth Avenue and is located immediately north of SLC.

The victim of the shooting had been driving to the location in a vehicle. In the vehicle were a few passengers, all of whom were known to the victim, police said in a press release just before 5 p.m. on Monday, Jul. 31, 2023.

“The accused party then fled from the scene,” Kingston Police detailed. “Members of the Kingston Police Major Crime Unit attended the scene to commence an investigation, and the accused was located and arrested a short time later, still in the area of Curtis Crescent. The accused was then transported to police headquarters where they were held to attend a bail hearing.”
As a result, Toronto resident Jaymes Roettger, age 18, was charged with:

- Possession a restricted weapon as an unlicensed person
- Possession of a loaded, unregulated firearm
- Pointing a firearm
- Using a firearm to commit an indictable offence
- Discharging a firearm with the intent to wound
