Those in the Picton area of Prince Edward County (PEC) may notice an increased police presence as members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) carry out training.

The PEC Detachment of the OPP will be carrying out “rapid deployment training” today, Thursday, Aug. 3, 2023. While police would not say where exactly the training is taking place (in order to deter people gathering to observe), Const. Aaron Miller, Media Relations Officer for the PEC OPP said the training operation will occur in the Picton area.

“The OPP is fully committed to public safety and continued training is key to keep our communities safe and Ontario secure. OPP will conduct immediate rapid deployment training today, allowing officers to train to respond to active threats in the community,” the OPP said in a statement.

“By doing so, officers will be better equipped to protect the community we serve.”

The training is expected to being in the morning and carry on through the day, “wrapping up in the late afternoon,” Miller said.

There is no risk to public safety during the training exercise.
