OPP looking for witnesses to collision on Highway 401 in Augusta Township

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are looking for witnesses to a collision between a tractor-trailer and a passenger vehicle which took place on the eastbound lanes of Highway 401, just east of Maitland, in Augusta Township earlier this month.

According to a release from the OPP, officers from the Grenville County Detachment responded to the collision at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Apr. 18, 2022. The Augusta Fire Rescue and Leeds Grenville Paramedic Service also attended the scene, along with an OPP Technical Collision Investigation (TCI) team who also assisted with the investigation.

As a result of the collision, three people were confirmed to be deceased and two others were transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and have since been released. The deceased have been identified as Chantal Dendooven-Legault, 68 years of age, Émerik Giroux, 7 years of age and Maélie Giroux, 3 years of age. According to the release, all three were from Laval, Quebec.

OPP said that the investigation is ongoing, with assistance from the Grenville County OPP Crime Unit. The OPP is appealing for witnesses and is asking that anyone who witnessed this collision or has dash-camera footage of the incident to notify the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
