OPP look for witnesses after sudden stop for ducks sends father and son to hospital

A single vehicle collision, which took place after another driver stopped suddenly while attempting to avoid a family of ducks crossing Highway 401 near Kingston, resulted in a father and son being taken to hospital with injuries.

The Frontenac Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to the collision at approximately 8:50 a.m. on Sunday, Jun. 17, 2018. The collision took place on Highway 401 eastbound about three kilometers west of Joyceville Road, according to a press release from the OPP.

A white vehicle was travelling eastbound when it came to a sudden stop in an attempt to avoid hitting the ducks. Subsequently, the vehicle travelling behind the white vehicle, a gold minivan, turned to avoid hitting the white vehicle, and left the roadway via the south side ditch. The minivan struck a tree, and the male driver and his 10-year-old son were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The white vehicle, possibly a Kia, left the scene prior to the OPP arriving.

Police are asking any witnesses that may have seen the collision to contact the Frontenac OPP Detachment at 1-888-310-1122.

The OPP remind motorists to consider the safety of other vehicles when attempting to avoid an animal or debris on the roadway.

Funny that I had an opp officer explain to me that when I had an empty lane infront of me approaching a green light that was about to turn yellow and a driver pulled infront of me from the other lane beside me and slam on his brakes as the light turned yellow reducing my stopping distance from 30 ft to 3 on a wet road I was at fault because you must allow enough space between vehicles to be able to stop in any situation that presents itself
