OPP carry out recovery after discovery of human remains in Lake Ontario

Drivers travelling on Highway 33/Loyalist Parkway today can expect to see a large police presence, as a vehicle is being recovered from Lake Ontario.
According to a release from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), at both Collins Bay and County Road 6, drivers can expect to see OPP vehicles and personnel as part of the recovery and ongoing investigation.
The OPP said that during the recovery of a vehicle from the lake in January 2023, police divers located another vehicle.
“During the follow-up investigation in April, it was determined that this vehicle contained human remains and had been in the water for many years,” the OPP said. “The identity of the deceased has not been determined.”
Members of the Lennox and Addington (L&A) County Detachment of the OPP, along with the OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit will be using a barge, offshore from the end of County Road 6 as part of the investigation and recovery efforts.
Divers, assisted by other support units including OPP Urban Search and Rescue and OPP Marine Units, will be removing the remains today and the vehicle will be lifted onto the barge tomorrow, according to the release.
The OPP is asking motorists not to stop along Highway 33, as this could pose a safety threat to themselves and other drivers.
The investigation by members of the L&A OPP Crime Unit, under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, is ongoing.
