With tax season upon us, OPP are advising the public to please remember that government agencies will not text you alerts regarding refunds. Be cautious to ensure you are corresponding with the legitimate government agency and be aware of organizational processes, OPP said in a media release.

“The data shows that fraud is an increasing problem within Prince Edward County, and all across Ontario, and we need to protect ourselves and our family members,” S/Sgt Hatch said. “Knowledge is power. It’s important to continue researching current trends and be aware of the ongoing scams in order to prevent victimization. Fraudsters work 24/7 to develop their skills and we all need to work together to stay alert.”

OPP provided these tips to prevent victimization:

  • Be in control of the information
  • Do not disclose personal information to unknown companies or individuals
  • Ask questions, confirm the legitimacy of anyone asking for information or money
  • Phone a friend or trusted authority if unsure
