Novelis employee succumbs to injuries after workplace incident
An employee at the Novelis plant in Kingston has passed away after a workplace incident, which occurred on the afternoon of Wednesday, Jun. 9, 2021.
Just before 2 p.m. that day, Kingston Fire and Rescue and Frontenac Paramedic Services were alerted of a rescue taking place at the plant. According to Kingston Fire and Rescue, their crews arrived on scene for the “technical rescue” at approximately 2:14 p.m.
“Crews performed CPR and the individual was transported to hospital. The employer will be contacting the Ministry of Labour regarding the incident,” Kingston Fire and Rescue relayed to Kingstonist.
On Thursday, Jun. 10, 2021, Novelis confirmed that Micah Baerwald, 27, passed away as a result of the injuries sustained while working at the plant that afternoon. His next of kin and co-workers have been notified.
“We are deeply saddened by Micah’s passing and extend our sincerest condolences to his family and friends. He was a friend to many and a hard worker with a positive attitude who was always willing to help others,” said Dennis Brady, Novelis Kingston Plant Manager. “An investigation is underway so that we can fully understand the cause of this tragic event. We temporarily shut down operations at the plant and have engaged with counselors to provide support to our employees.”
The Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development confirmed that the incident – which reportedly involved a high-voltage electrocution – had taken place, and that an inspector has been assigned to the case. That investigation is on-going, according to the Ministry.
