Kingston Fire and Rescue crews had an early morning when they were called to a garage fire just before 2 a.m. on Monday, Jul. 12, 2021.

The fire broke out in the garage of a residence in the 400 block of Nelson Street, between Third and Fifth Avenues. Four Kingston Fire and Rescue vehicles were dispatched to the fire, and, upon arrival, crews found the structure in heavy flames. Thick smoke filled the area of the Kingscourt neighbourhood. According to residents in the neighbourhood, the residence has been vacant for some time.

Fire crews worked to quickly knock down the fire, however, remained on scene for two hours putting out and monitoring hot spots, according to Kingston Fire and Rescue. No civilians or firefighters were injured in the blaze.

The cause of the fire has not been determined, and damages are estimated at $12,000.

“While this fire occurred in a detached garage, KFR reminds the community about the importance of working smoke and CO alarms,” Kingston Fire and Rescue said in an email to Kingstonist.

“Alarms should be tested monthly, and batteries replaced twice annually.”
