A familiar sight will be returning to the streets of downtown Kingston. Murney, the Kingston Police horse, is now in training with Constable Amy Carter and hopes to be welcoming visitors and residents throughout downtown Kingston over the summer.

In a recent report to Kingston City County, City staff recommended the creation of a Community Focus Group for the downtown Kingston area. One of the recommendations in the report is to “support the increased presence of uniformed Kingston Police officers walking in the downtown core as part of a group of downtown ‘ambassadors’ with the appropriate de-escalation training. This group of ambassadors may also be assisted by the continued support from Murney, the Kingston Police mounted unit.”

According to a release from the Downtown Kingston BIA, Kingston Police are looking at options to include ongoing expenses for Murney to be part of its 2023 budget.

In the past, Murney has benefited from donations from the community to fund her ongoing expenses. “It’s important to ensure Murney continues to work and live in a healthy environment ahead of her return to the important public work she undertakes with Cst. Amy Carter,” the BIA stated.

According to the release, Murney’s annual expenses are approximately $35,000. The BIA, along with Kingston Police, and the City of Kingston are asking those who can to consider a 2022 donation. The goal is to raise an additional $32,000 by the end of the year.

The BIA shared the following ways to help meet the goal:

One hundred percent of all donations qualify for a tax receipt and every dollar raised directly supports Murney’s care and training, according to the release.

“Corporate sponsorships are also available for programs such as Murney on Patrol,” the BIA continued. “If you own a business and are interested in partnering with the City of Kingston to connect with customers in a unique way, please reach out to Julie Fossitt, Manager, Marketing and Revenue Development at [email protected].”

“Thank you for your ongoing support for this valued and unique member of the Kingston Police Service and the community.”
