There’s a newly named plow on the roads of Kingston — or there will be when the next snow falls. Murney Plower was christened on Monday, Dec. 11, 2023, thanks to the winning submission by Melina Fragis.
In early November, the City of Kingston invited residents to get involved and create creative names for the nameless City of Kingston snowplow. At the end of the month, the City weighed all the suggestions and created a shortlist of contenders for the large winter vehicle’s name, which the public voted for on the Get Involved Kingston page. Now, with a play-on-words giving a nod to Kingston’s Murney Tower, the new plow has been officially named.
“We had an unveiling with [Fragis] yesterday,” the City shared with Kingstonist in an email. “The plow is currently in service, so the next time there are winter operation needs, it will be on the road.”
According to the City, there were more than 400 name submissions and 300 votes “that led to Murney Plower.”
Public works staff, Councillor Conny Glenn and Fragis were present at the name unveiling. The City shared that it was a constituent of Councillor Glenn who suggested the naming competition. Glenn was also there in her capacity as Deputy Mayor for the month of December 2023.
“We thank everyone for their participation and encourage them to keep their eyes out for Murney Plower this winter,” the City concluded.
