Those who travel Highway 401 through the Kingston area may have noticed a collection of road work signs notifying drivers of upcoming closures along the roadway throughout the summer months.

Kingstonist has received a number of queries from readers curious about the signage, as they seem to indicate that sections of the busy highway will all be closed within a similar time frame.

In response to inquiries, the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) shared that they are “initiating a rehabilitation project on Highway 401 that is approximately 18 km long and runs from east of Westbrook Road to 1.5 km east of Highway 15.”

The work is scheduled to be completed this year and includes localized pavement rehabilitations in the eastbound and westbound lanes of the highway, and the interchange ramps at Sir John A. MacDonald Boulevard, according to the MTO. Bridge rehabilitation work will also take place at Sydenham Road and Highway 15 underpasses.

“To minimize impacts associated with the required closures, single lane closures during daytime hours are only permitted within the three-lane section of Highway 401 from Monday to Thursday and will be opened by 6 am on Fridays. All other lane and ramp closures will be intermittent nighttime and no lane or ramp closures will occur on weekends,” the MTO detailed.

“The advance notice signs currently erected indicate a window of time in which those specific ramps might be intermittently closed at night. The ramps will not be closed for that entire period or every night consecutively. Consecutive closures of on- or off-ramps in the same direction at the same time will not be used.”

The agency stated that further information on when closures will occur will be shared as the work progresses.

According to the traveller information website 511, the first area that will be affected will be the Highway 401 westbound lanes at Sydenham Road which will experience alternating lane closures, starting Sunday, Jul. 7, 2024, at 8 p.m.

“Travellers can visit http://511on.ca/ or @511Ontario for updates on work and traffic impacts,” the MTO stated.

Kingstonist will provide available traffic updates in our weekly traffic reports, and will provide further coverage if/when more details become available.
