Movies in the Square 2023 offering ‘exceptional line up’ this summer

Movies in the Square will return to downtown Kingston this summer. Now in its 16th season, the Downtown Kingston Business Improvement Area (BIA) said this beloved free outdoor cinema event has become a highlight of the summer, captivating the hearts of residents and visitors alike.

For 2023, Movies in the Square has an “exceptional line-up of films and a vibrant atmosphere,” the BIA said in a media release, noting that it promises to deliver unforgettable evenings of entertainment for the community. 

“This year, we have some big news!” expressed Nayeli Salazar, Events & Marketing Assistant with Downtown Kingston.

“Following the tremendous success of the Latin party during the Encanto movie presentation last year, Movies in the Square will feature fun surprises at select screenings that add to the overall experience. Stay tuned for more details.”

Movies in the Square kicks off Thursday, Jun. 15, 2023, with Rosie, presented in partnership with Kingston Pride and Reelout Queer Film Festival, two days ahead of the Pride Parade weekend.

This year’s movie line-up:

  • June 15 – Rosie 
  • June 22 – Midnight in Paris 
  • June 29 – Sherlock Holmes 
  • July 13 – 13 Going on 30 
  • July 20 – Ghostbusters: Afterlife 
  • July 27 – Black Panther: Wakanda Forever 
  • August 3 – Mary Poppins Returns 
  • August 10 – Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone 
  • August 17 – The Book of Life 
  • August 24 – Grease 2 
  • August 31 – Minions: The Rise of Gru 

Movies in the Square is a free event that runs Thursdays at dusk in Springer Market Square. June and July movies typically start around 9 p.m. with August movies airing closer to 8 p.m., according to the release.

Popcorn and drinks are available to purchase, the BIA stated. Don’t forget your lawn chair, snacks, and a blanket for those cooler nights.
